Like my last class, this is a four week, online workshop designed around your busy schedule. There is no set meeting time! I send out lectures each week, and you have several days to participate in the class discussion, ask questions, and post examples. Because the schedule is flexible, it easily works around your school, work, or family commitments. Students from all over the world have found it easy to keep up and connect even in different time zones; my international students from the first class have already signed up to take this one.
What will we cover?
Week One:
- Market Directories and Submission Trackers: What is a submission tracker? A market directory? Do you need an online database, or a closed system on your own computer? We’ll look at the options and decide.
- Finding the RIGHT Market: What genre is your story? How much is it worth? Should you aim high or move one step forward at a time? Do you want the easy publication or the bigger paycheck? We’ll talk about the answers to those questions and the markets which meet your needs.
Week Two:
- Reading Submission Guidelines: what are those editors really looking for?
- Meeting Submission Guidelines: now that you know what they want, how do you know if you have it? ADDED: And when to query!
Week 3:
- Bios (3 lengths); what to include and what to avoid
- Cover letters
Week 4:
- How to read rejections
- When do you resubmit, revise, or trunk your work?
The lessons and sample material are all based on my experience as both a writer and an editor, including examples from real submissions I’ve gotten.
Like the last class, it’s only $50 to sign up. And if you sign up now, you can get access to the class materials in advance.
We’re going to start on September 30, next Monday!

When you take my classes, you keep access to the forum even after the class is over. We have sections with market guidelines, our notes on acceptances/rejections, an area for people seeking critiques of their work-in-progress, and more.
